RI Hall of Fame Inductee Shawnn Monteiro stands as a premier jazz vocalist whose captivating performances have graced stages from the United States to Europe. Her distinctive style, characterized by pulsating lyricism and blues-infused improvisations, reflects the profound influences of jazz legends Carmen McRae and Sarah Vaughan. Born into a musical lineage as the daughter of renowned bassist Jimmy Woode of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, and mentored by her godfather, trumpeter Clark Terry, Monteiro’s artistry is deeply rooted in jazz heritage. Discovered by Latin jazz maestro Mongo Santamaria in San Jose, California, she embarked on a global tour as his sole vocalist and female percussionist, sharing stages with icons like Stan Kenton, Celia Cruz, and Weather Report. Vocal Performance at the Jazz Music Awards, further cementing her status in the jazz world. A dedicated educator, she has conducted masterclasses worldwide and served as an adjunct professor at institutions such as the Hartt School of Music and Rhode Island College. Monteiro continues to enchant audiences with her warm charisma and timeless interpretations of the American Songbook.
